It is said that 90% of the country's landmass is made up of precious stones bearing Precambrian rocks, with the exception of the Jaffna Peninsula which is made up of Miocene rocks. The gems extracted in the raw state are sometimes in the form of crystals of small or very large proportions. Exported only in the form of finished and polished, faceted or cabochon stones, ready for use.

Of all the precious stones that are found in the country today, there are few cabochon cut stones, such as rubies, stars, sapphires, moonstones and all the stones in the world. cat's eye. All other varieties will be domesticated in local lapidaries.

Because of this, Sri Lanka is also currently importing different types of raw minerals from other countries such as Tanzania, Madagascar, Thailand and Myanmar to produce more jewelry. Most of these imported gems are not found naturally in Sri Lanka, such as lapis and lazuli. The Sri Lankan government allows importers to import these natural minerals tax-free.
